This is a report that sets out what the County Council have done and what they are planning to do. There is still a long way to go but we are making progress.<\/p>\n<p>Cambridgeshire County Council has responded to a request by the Department for Transport (DfT) for local highway authorities to produce detailed transparency reports on maintenance activities to secure additional funding.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The council\u2019s report was published today and is available on their website at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk\/highways-transparency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk\/<strong>highways-transparency<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Key highlights from the report show:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Since 2023-24, the amount of capital funding spent on highway maintenance has increased by\u00a0<strong>\u00a335m<\/strong>, from\u00a0<strong>\u00a324m\u00a0<\/strong>to\u00a0<strong>\u00a359m.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The Council has allocated more than\u00a0<strong>\u00a373m<\/strong>\u00a0for highways maintenance in 2025\/26 inclusive of revenue funding.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Over the last five years, they have repaired an average of\u00a0<strong>55,400<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>individual potholes<\/strong>\u00a0each year.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In 2024\/25 the Council:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Spent more than\u00a0<strong>\u00a330m<\/strong>\u00a0improving over\u00a0<strong>145 kilometres<\/strong>\u00a0of roads county-wide.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Reconstructed or resurfaced\u00a0<strong>166 roads.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Spent more than\u00a0<strong>\u00a34.5m<\/strong>\u00a0repairing\u00a0<strong>52,229 potholes<\/strong>\u00a0across the county.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Received 16,371 potholes<\/strong>\u00a0reports from our residents.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Spent more than\u00a0<strong>\u00a35m<\/strong>\u00a0improving over\u00a0<strong>120km<\/strong>\u00a0of key walking and cycling routes county-wide.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Reconstructed or repaired\u00a0<strong>241 footpaths.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Emptied and cleaned more than<strong>35,000 drains<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Upgraded 31 traffic signals<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Recycled\u00a0<strong>41,000 tonnes<\/strong>\u00a0of material and saved over\u00a0<strong>735 tonnes carbon dioxide equivalent,\u00a0<\/strong>through various sustainability and carbon reduction processes.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In 2025\/26, the Council have planned the following improvements:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>259 schemes<\/strong>\u00a0to repair\u00a0<strong>135km of road<\/strong>\u00a0(with over 60% being preventative treatment work).\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>253 schemes<\/strong>\u00a0to repair key walking and cycling routes county-wide.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>5 bridges<\/strong>\u00a0will be upgraded.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>20 traffic signals<\/strong>\u00a0will be replaced\/upgraded.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Cllr Alex Beckett, chair of the Highways and Transport Committee at Cambridgeshire County Council, said:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We have listened to Cambridgeshire residents who tell us time and again they want the condition of the county\u2019s highways network improved. So, against a backdrop of economic uncertainty and tight funding, we are spending record amounts to fix the backlog that built up over many years of austerity, because we know this is a priority.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We are making good progress and, while there is still a long way to go, there are more positive improvements coming this year. We welcome the DfT\u2019s new transparency guidance for local highways authorities because it fits with what we are already doing to change how we work and make sure we communicate openly and transparently with everyone who uses Cambridgeshire&#8217;s highways network.\u2019&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The state of our roads is a persistent annoyance and worry.
