Addenbrookes Roundabout roadworks

I have received some anxious requests for information about the roadworks on Addenbrookes roundabout which will start in earnest on 19 May next week.

Timing

An application was made to Streetworks, the agency that controls when roadworks happen,  to carry out the changes to the roundabout, but this was initially refused due the level of other roadworks that are going on. Further discussions revealed that the choice to carry out the works was either very quickly or in about 2 years time. The delay was deemed unacceptable given the safety concerns at the roundabout and there was also a concern that the funding would no longer be available at a later time, so the decision was made to proceed as quickly as possible.

What is happening?

This is phase I of the roadworks and they are removing a metre of the central roundabout. In order to do this they will also need to remove 3 trees which will be replanted by the County Council later in the year.

Phase II of the works will install cycle and footpaths around the roundabout and this will happen in August. The cycle paths will link into the cycle path that will be built on Fendon Road as part of the Cycle+ programme.

Overnight works

We have queried the need for works to be done overnight but because this is a critical means of access to Addenbrookes and is also such a well used and critical route into the city it is necessary to do this overnight.

Noise and light

Roadworks will consist of digging up the road and the roundabout and then laying the new road. Digging is noisy but laying is much quieter. It has been agreed that digging will go on from 8pm to midnight only. We have queried this and suggested 10pm would have been better, but this would mean a doubling of the time needed for the roadworks and also delayed the scheduling of the works. The noise reduction measures are as follows:

  • All vehicles and equipment will only be running when they are being used i.e. no idling
  • Vacuum excavators are being used to remove the material dug up and they are much quieter than the normal ones.
  • White noise will be used to lessen the effect of any noise generated
  • Regular checks on noise levels will be carried out throughout the night

There will not be noise every night as the digging part is shorter than the laying part of the activities.
